Overview
Lucknow, is the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Hazratganj is the downtown area situated in the heart of Lucknow. In addition to bazaars, it also contains shopping complexes, Government Buildings, theaters and offices. Lucknow contains notable examples of architecture. The Bara Imambara (1784) is a shrine which has a huge arched hall, built by Asaf-ud-Daulas. Upstairs, Bhool Bhulaiya is a maze of narrow tunnels with city views from its upper balconies. The Rumi Darwaza, or Turkish Gate, was modeled (1784) on the Sublime Porte (Bab-i Hümayun) in Istanbul. The best-preserved monument is the Residency (1800), the scene of the defense by British troops during the Indian Mutiny. A memorial commemorating the Indians who died during the uprising was erected in 1957.
