Overview

Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal state in India. Founded as an East India Company trading post, it was India's capital under the British Raj from 1773–1911. Colonial architecture, museums, art galleries, traditional food, temples, music and theatre are visible landmarks of the city. It is an amalgamation of traditional and modern. It’s also home to Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa. Dakshineswar Kali Temple, one of the major pilgrimage center dedicated to Goddess Kali is located on the bank of River Hoogly. Howrah Bridge one of the most popular bridges of India, built on the river Hooghly.
